Laranjal Golf Course makes up part of the Quinta do Lago collection of golf courses, complementing Quinta do Lago’s north and south courses. Along with the south course, Laranjal is a championship standard course – players can expect stunning undulating fairways, pine trees and lakes aplenty. Another feature of Laranjal Golf Course are the orange trees, which remind players of the course’s origin as an orange grove.
Opened in 2009 after being designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, the course had its popularity soar as it claimed ‘Best Golf Course’ at the 2011 Portuguese Travel Awards.
The course is just a couple of kilometres from the Quinta do Lago resort and is based in the beautiful Ludo Valley. Renowned for the high quality of its greens, Laranjal sows the turf with Penn A4. Fairways receive Bermuda grass. Although the terrain is never too steep, the course is not for the faint hearted with its tricky lakes and long par 5s, including the signature 16th hole.
Quinta do Lago South is a championship standard course designed in 1974 by American architect William Mitchell, who first helped the Algarve to carve out American style golf courses. Referred to as the “crown jewel” of Quinta do Lago, it has hosted eight Portuguese Open competitions and drummed up a prestigious reputation. The course, offering views of Ria Formosa National Park, was the location of Colin Montgomerie’s record-breaking 1989 Portuguese Open victory.
The front nine favours a draw shot from the tee, but the back nine requires more fade from the tee. This, combined with plentiful pines and strategically-placed bunkers means that any golfer has to stay very alert when playing the south course at Quinta do Lago.
Holes 3, 15 and 17 feature water hazards in the form of lakes, which is typical for the region. There are low scores to be made if the player can identify the route intended by the designer, and have the skill to pull off the required shots. Lower-level golfers can take some pleasure from this course, but Quinta do Lago is a championship quality course which is known the world over. This makes it more of an ideal challenge for advanced golfers.
Quinta do Lago’s north course, originally designed by William Mitchell and Rocky Roquemore, is perhaps known among golfers as the slightly less challenging between the north and south courses. A 2014 redesign, contributed to by former European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, saw the course heavily upgraded with the drainage and greens receiving plenty of attention.
The north course displays features typical to the Algarve – fairways which are sheltered by lines of pine trees, complemented by bunkers and a fair few water hazards. On many holes, players will face a blind tee shot. All par 4s include sharp dog-legs, with the exception of only the 10th and 13th. The course’s par 5s all require powerful yet accurate tee shots, as long distance is combined with narrow routes between the pines.
Suited for golfers who can naturally draw the ball, the course is also home to some lakes which turn out to be common pitfalls for even advanced players. These are located on the 13th and 18th hole. Although there are some unforgiving elements, the 2014 redesign saw the incorporation of low-cut Bermuda grass, which creates more amateur-friendly conditions around the greens. Golfers of all levels can enjoy the north course at Quinta do Lago.
