The Vale do Lobo Ocean Golf Course, one of two courses situated in Vale do Lobo, is a challenging coastal course which blends fairway and coastline seamlessly. Designed by Sir Henry Cotton in 1972, the complete par 73 course was opened in 1985. The front nine is played inland, before the 11th hole reveals a fairway running straight down to the beach. It makes for a wonderful view, but one which must not distract any player who wishes to keep a low score.
Portuguese golfing champion Antonio Sobrinho has described the kind of play the Vale do Lobo Ocean Golf Course requires as “different”. Creating draw and fade at the right times is crucial, and the lowest scores come around as a result of consistently great shot shaping. This course represents a great challenge for intermediate golfers, although the slopes can get steep. The inland holes provide a steady start before reaching the signature back nine, containing the majestic 11th hole and the par 3 15th hole which runs directly alongside the coast.
